I built my new PC from the ground up and freshly installed Windows XP on a brand new hard drive. I'm running an Asus A7V333 board with the VIA KT333 chipset (if that matters).
The install went perfect. I had NO cards installed but the AGP video card.
Don't know if this matters, but I did install the Via 4 in 1 drivers and the USB 2.0 drivers. I played games for a few days and things went smoothly. Then, I bought a brand new US Robotics V.92 modem to install and when I boot up and XP recognizes new hardware, it comes up as 'PCI Simple Communications Controller.' Then, when I point it to the driver CD, for a split second it seems XP finds the driver than I get: 'An error occurred during the installation of the device. The data is invalid.' I tried this several times to no avail. The, I got an older plain PCI modem out of an old PC and tried that - same problem.
Then, I went and bought a different modem - a Diamond SupraMAX V.92. Same problem. All this told me that there is something wrong with Windows XP or Windows XP/motherboard. I don't know. I have NOT updated my BIOS or Via 4 in 1 drivers.Anyone have an idea? Off the top of my head, I'm not sure what the problem could be. But I would suggest updating the BIOS as a first step. What version of the Via 4 in 1 drivers do you have installed?
They have been known to cause problems at times.Ensure that there are no IRQ conflicts. Try moving the modem to a different slot to see if that resolves the issue. I know the Asus A7V had a problem with SB Live! They preferred to be in PCI slot 3. A lot of conflicts if you tried to install it in any other slot.

If you design software that is fool-proof, only a fool will want to use it.
